Vegetation Management

Vegetation plays an integral role in a healthy functioning water cycle as well as providing habitat for native species. Within the Brigalow Belt Bioregion there is less then 40% of the original vegetative cover.

Road reserves and Stock Routes are extremely important vegetation corridors that often link fragmented habitats. However, Council understands there are instances such as replacing a boundary fence or burning for hazard reduction where vegetation may be required to be removed. In these instances, a permit approval from Council is required.

Roadside Burning Approval

Council approval is required for landholders to burn their adjacent road reserves to improve environmental health or for hazard reduction conditional upon the following:

  • Pasture is not going to be utilised by travelling stock
  • The permit holder provides a signed indemnity form
  • The permit holder provides a copy of their public liability insurance
  • The fire practice is in conjunction with the regional ecosystem fire guidelines

Once you have Council approval you will need to advise your neighbours of your intent to gain a permit and apply to your local Fire Warden for the permit.

Fence Line Clearing Permit Process

Council understands there are instances such as replacing a boundary fence where vegetation may be required to be removed. In these instances, an approved permit from Council is required.

Under the Land Act a landholder can clear up to a 3m width off their boundary line into the road reserve with permission from the local government authority.

Process for Permit application:  Call Council or visit a Customer Contact Center to have a Fence line clearing permit application be submitted.  You will need to provide the following details:
  • Lot and Plan number/Assessment number
  • Reason for wanting to clear vegetation
  • Road frontage they plan to clear
  • A basic traffic safety management plan
