Western Downs to host Remembrance Day services across the Region 2024

Western Downs residents are invited to come together and attend one of the many services being held across the region this Remembrance Day to honour the men and women who have fought and sacrificed for our nation’s freedom.

Western Downs Regional Council, along with local RSL sub-branches and community groups, is organising eight commemoration services across the region on Monday, 11 November.

Western Downs Regional Council Mayor Andrew Smith said it was important to recognise and honour the sacrifices made by service personnel in both war and peacetime.

“Remembrance Day holds great significance for our nation as we pause to honour and appreciate the service and sacrifices of our fellow Australians,” Cr Smith said.

“The phrase ‘it’s the people that make it’ resonates deeply on Remembrance Day, as we honour the legacy of those who courageously served, especially those who never made it back home.

“Australia is often referred to as the ‘lucky country,’ and we are indeed fortunate to enjoy the freedoms and lifestyle we have today.

"On days like Remembrance Day, it’s crucial for us to come together as a community to reflect on the sacrifices made - and those still being made - for this beautiful, free land we cherish.

“Council takes pride in supporting local RSL sub-branches and community groups, who generously dedicate their time to planning and coordinating the numerous services held across the Western Downs each year.

“Eight commemoration services will be held across the Western Downs, ensuring that all residents have the chance to attend and pay their respects.

“I’d like to invite all residents and visitors to join in paying their respects to our service men and women throughout the region.”
