Published on 09 January 2025
The Western Downs is all set for a day of fair dinkum Aussie fun, unity and national pride as part of 2025 Australia Day celebrations.
Council is proud to be partnering with local community organisations to present an exciting family-friendly program of Australia Day events across the Western Downs on Sunday, 26 January.
Australia Day events will be held in Chinchilla, Dalby, Miles, Jandowae, Tara and Wandoan, and the celebrations include a series of free barbecue breakfasts, family fun at the pool events, and even a colour run.
Western Downs Regional Council Mayor Andrew Smith said Australia Day was the perfect occasion to reflect, respect and celebrate the Australian spirit.
"Australia Day provides an opportunity for us all to come together and demonstrate the pride we have in our communities and celebrate our incredible region and country," he/she said.
"We like to say 'it's the people that make it' on the Western Downs and we are renowned for our mateship, our resilience and our active, vibrant communities.
"Through our Australia Day events we are able to make great memories with friends and family and celebrate achievements of incredible people in our communities through the presentation of our annual Australia Day Awards."
Mayor Smith said six Australia Day events will be held across the region, each kicking off with a hearty barbecue breakfast followed by Australia Day Awards ceremonies.
"The pinnacle of our Australia Day events is always the presentation of our Australia Day Awards, which applaud the selflessness of our region's volunteers and celebrate the remarkable achievements of our local community groups, creatives and athletes," he said.
"Through our Australia Day Awards we acknowledge and commend the outstanding individuals who serve as the heart and backbone of our local communities."
Tara residents are encouraged to pull out their joggers and participate in a colour fun run at the Tara Lagoon. Chinchilla, Dalby, Miles and Tara will also host family fun at the pool celebrations with discounted entry.
