Seniors in the region honoured with festivities during Seniors Month
Published on 03 October 2023
The Western Downs is celebrating the contributions of its senior citizens with a variety of fun and inclusive events scheduled across the region throughout October.
The region is taking part in a state-wide celebration of Seniors Month which recognises the valuable contributions made by our older residents and aims to strengthen bonds with the community.
Council Spokesperson for Community and Cultural Development Councillor Kaye Maguire said our senior citizens helped to build the active, vibrant communities we know and love today, and that Seniors Month is a wonderful way to acknowledge and thank them for their contributions to our region.
"We like to say that on the Western Downs 'it's the people that make it'. When it comes to the region's seniors that is particularly true. Our older residents built the foundations of the Western Downs and shaped the communities that we know and love today,” Cr Maguire said
“Throughout October we acknowledge and thank them, and nurture important social bonds with friends and family.
"Council takes pride in collaborating with local community organisations to deliver a diverse array of events throughout the region during Seniors Month.
There's a little something for everyone, including morning teas, movie days, and much more happening right across the Western Downs.”
Cr. Maguire said one of the standout attractions of this year's celebration is the senior's movie event, offering senior citizens discounted entry to a movie screening at the Chinchilla Cinema.
"This year our seniors will be able to enjoy a screening of 'The Duke' for only $2. This madcap adventure follows the real-life story of a taxi driver who stole a painting from London's National Gallery as part of his campaign for pensioners' benefits. Not only will attendees get to enjoy this wonderfully heart-warming story, popcorn is also included in the ticket price,” she said.
"A free bus services will be available from Tara"
"I encourage all of our senior community members to actively participate in the month's events, seize the chance to reunite with loved ones, socialise with friends, and foster stronger connections within our wonderful community."
