Revitalised cultural precinct to boost Chinchilla's vibrant community

Chinchilla's arts and cultural offerings will be bolstered thanks to the completion of the $8.4 million revitalisation of the Cultural Precinct which is now complete.
Delivered in partnership with the Australian Government's Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program, the major upgrade has breathed new life into the town's cultural hub, promoting new opportunities and boosting economic growth.
Western Downs Regional Council Mayor Paul McVeigh said the project had created new opportunities to grow arts and culture on the Western Downs.
“Arts and culture are a key part of any active, vibrant community and it’s fantastic to see the completion of this revitalised community asset which is the ‘beating heart’ of creativity for Chinchilla,” Cr McVeigh said.
“Council recognises the role arts and culture play in supporting the liveability of the region as well as contributing to the local economy and this major upgrade will ensure the needs of the community will continue to be met now and for many years to come.”
The upgrade has delivered a range of enhancements, including a modernised cinema entry with revitalised Candy Bar and Box Office area to create opportunities to host film events, a reinvigorated library with open and welcoming entry way and seating, multimedia area, computer room, and reading courtyard, and new 24-hour communal workshop for community activities.
The Lapunyah Gallery has also received a major facelift with a whole new layout and refreshed look and feel.
The precinct has undergone some significant external changes with beautiful street arbours and ‘bush houses’, new seating, walkway, improved lighting, wayfinding signage, additional toilets, and grass amphitheatre and sitting terraces.
Leader of the Nationals and Federal Member for Maranoa David Littleproud said he was honoured to have helped secure federal funding to deliver the new Cultural Precinct.
“Chinchilla is a rapidly growing community with a proud history in the arts,” Mr Littleproud said.
“This project will ensure the next generation of Chinchilla locals can take that legacy forward in the years ahead.
“It gives me great pride to have helped secured the federal funding to make this project possible as I believe it will make a significant impact on not just Chinchilla, but the entire Western Downs community.”
