Regional water tank rebate scheme returns to improve water security

The Western Downs Regional Council is taking proactive measures to assist residents by providing a rebate for individuals interested in installing a rainwater tank on their property.

Applications are now being accepted for the 2024-2025 financial year as part of a strategic initiative aimed at enhancing community resilience and improving the water security of the region. 

Council Spokesperson for Utilities, Councillor Sam Condon, stated that the well-received incentive would alleviate pressures on water storage while providing advantages to both individual households and the broader community. 

“Council is committed to sustainable planning for the future, and supporting its residents in the installation of rainwater tanks on their properties represents a straightforward and effective approach to enhancing resilience throughout the Western Downs," stated Cr. Condon. 

“Recognising that long-term water availability is a concern for many areas, including our own, we have incorporated a popular subsidy scheme into the $12.6 million budget to enhance the region's long-term water security. This investment will also facilitate region-wide upgrades and improvements to water infrastructure. 

“As of June 2024, we have finalised 147 tank rebates, resulting in a significant reduction in our reliance on the town water supply. This initiative has enhanced the local water storage capacity throughout the region. Additionally, the program supports local employment by generating business for the region's tank manufacturers and installers, contributing positively to the economy. 

"Council is proud to be delivering this initiative once again to continue these efforts, and I would strongly encourage our residents to get on board and take advantage of what this has to offer." 

The rebate amount varies from $500 and $2,000 depending on the size of tank purchased and if the tank is to be installed in one of Council's potable or non-potable water networks. 

This scheme also continues to support residents in non-potable areas of the region, with them being eligible for the $2,000 rebate when installing tanks with a 40,000-litre capacity or more. 

The rebate applies to new tanks only and will be made available on a first-come, first-served basis. The rebate is available through a pre-approval process and reimbursed when proof of purchase is provided. Council will also attend the property to ensure the tank is fully installed and operational.
