MEDIA STATEMENT: Major police incident, Wiembilla

Published on 13 December 2022

Western Downs Regional Council wishes to express its deepest condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of those affected by the tragic and terrible events of the past 24 hours at Wieambilla.

We stand by our local Queensland Police Service community through this difficult and troubling time, and we are thankful for their courage, service and efforts to keep this community peaceful and safe.

WDRC Mayor Paul McVeigh says this unspeakable event should never have occurred.

“This is an absolute tragedy, and our hearts are breaking for the three innocent people killed in such horrific circumstances yesterday,” he said.

“These two young police officers went to work to serve our community and keep our people safe, and unfortunately, they never made it home to their loved ones.

“Our thoughts and sincere condolences are with the friends, families and colleagues of both of these police officers and the member of the public killed yesterday in this terrible incident.

“We also offer our thoughts and sympathy to the responders who attended the scene overnight and those who will continue to work on this tragedy in the days and weeks ahead.

“The Western Downs might be a large region, but it's made up of many small, tight-knit communities who are absolutely reeling from this unthinkable loss.”
