First look at the Chinchilla Aquatic Precinct draft concept masterplan
Published on 17 December 2024
Western Downs Regional Council has revealed the draft concept masterplan for the new Chinchilla Aquatic Precinct and is seeking broad community feedback on the design of the new facility.
The new aquatic precinct will be developed at 35-41 Villier Street, which is the site of the former Cypress Pines Caravan Park, directly across the road from the current facility.
Western Downs Regional Council Mayor Andrew Smith said the draft concept masterplan had been developed through extensive consultation with a local stakeholder reference group that included representatives from local swimming and sports clubs, health services, volunteer groups and the local chamber of commerce.
“The masterplan, developed by Facility Design Group and Rounsefell Design, reaffirms Council’s commitment to providing community facilities that are alive with activities and connect our community,” Mayor Smith said.
“Council’s Aquatic Facilities Strategy has identified that the current Chinchilla Aquatic Centre facilities are approaching end of life, and the release of the draft concept masterplan is a major step in our delivery of a new aquatic facility for our community.
“Earlier rounds of community consultation and feedback from the stakeholder reference group have highlighted the need for the new Aquatic Precinct that complements the natural surroundings and attractions of the neighbouring Chinchilla Botanic Parkland.
“Some minor remediation works will be completed at the current Chinchilla Aquatic Centre over the next two years to ensure the current pool remains operational during the detailed design and construction phases of the new facility are completed.”
The plan features a new indoor/outdoor 50 metre pool with eight lanes, indoor aquatic hall with learn to swim and separate toddler pool, aquatic support areas, allied health and rehabilitation gym areas, cafe/kiosk, amenities and change areas, multi-purpose areas, outdoor recreation areas, and administration spaces.
Mayor Smith said the draft concept design phase is expected to run until the end of January 2025 with detailed design expected to start in February.
“The draft concept masterplan is available to view on Council’s Have Your Say website and there are a few drop-in feedback sessions coming up for those who might prefer to see the plans in person and have a chat,” he said.
"Drop-in sessions will be held at the Chinchilla Aquatic Centre, on 15 January 2-6pm and 16 January 2025 7am-12pm, and are a great way to provide feedback and discuss the draft masterplan with our facilities team.
"There will also be opportunity for community members to provide feedback until the end of January at the Contact Centre and the Chinchilla Library".
