Council grants to back new community initiatives

Western Downs Regional Council is continuing to support the fantastic work of local community groups with the latest round of Council funding grants allocated to three local organisations.
The Meandarra Show received funding as part of the latest Local Events Program round.
The grants have been allocated under the Local Events Program and Community Projects Program, which offer funding to not-for-profit groups working to make the region a more happy, inclusive community.
Council Spokesperson for Community and Cultural Development Councillor Kaye Maguire said Council empowered communities to develop local initiatives and events.
“We are a strong, sustainable community that is built on the people that make our towns so wonderful, and we are delighted to support the tireless efforts of our local community groups and clubs,” Cr Maguire said.
“As part of the Local Events program, Council has allocated $5,000 to the Meandarra State School P&C Association to support the Meandarra Annual Show.
“Council has also allocated $2,000 plus $2,000 in-kind assistance to Chinchilla Community Commerce and Industry to support its ‘One Long Table’ event.”
Meandarra P&C Committee Member Karen Jackson said Council’s support was vital to the delivery of the annual show.
“The Meandarra State School Show is one of our biggest events of the year and brings everyone together from our local area, and neighbouring communities,” Mrs Jackson said.
“This event is delivered entirely by volunteers so Council’s financial support goes a long way to help us host a Show the community will love and support.
“The Meandarra Show will take place on Saturday 18 September, and we encourage everyone to save the date and come along.”
Cr Maguire said Council had also allocated funding under its Community Projects Program, which supports equipment purchases, capital infrastructure and upgrading facilities to improve services to the community.
“Jandowae Squash Club has received $1,400 to purchase a defibrillator for its facility,” she said.
“Council offers several grants programs throughout the year and I encourage residents to get in touch and find out how Council can help support local initiatives.”
The next competitive round of grants ($2,000 and over) is now open for applications, and closes on Tuesday, 7 September.
