Western Downs Regional Council has announced the selected artist for the 2024-25 Lake Broadwater Public Art Project.

Council is thrilled to announce Frederick Beel as the selected artist for its 2024-25 Lake Broadwater Public Art Project.

The 2024-25 Public Art Project aimed to engage artists of various career stages, inviting them to propose site-responsive 2D or 3D designs that creatively and sensitively interact with the cultural heritage and natural environment of Lake Broadwater.

Western Downs Regional Council Spokesperson for Community and Cultural Development Cr Peter Saxelby said Mr Beel's design stood out among the submissions, capturing the essence of Lake Broadwater's unique cultural and natural landscape.

"This project demonstrates our Council's commitment to fostering a vibrant public art ecosystem, enhancing the region's liveability, and strengthening its reputation as a thriving hub for arts and culture," Cr Saxelby said.

"I'm really excited that we have the opportunity to bring Fredrick's incredible vision to life to compliment the natural beauty of Lake Broadwater Conservation Park.

“His design is a remarkable blend of artistic creativity and environmental sensitivity. We are excited to see his work transform Lake Broadwater into a captivating and reflective space for both residents and visitors.

“The Western Downs boasts some of the finest natural attractions in Australia, and Frederick’s project will contribute to the aesthetic enhancement and interpretation of both built and natural environments, while celebrating community identity and pride.”

Mr Beel will collaborate closely with the Council to complete the production and installation of the final artwork, ensuring it resonates with the local community and honours the beauty of Lake Broadwater.

Cr Saxelby also highlighted the success of previous public art initiatives, such as the recent mural at Tara Lagoon Parklands.

"I'm confident that Mr Beel's project will further enrich the region's cultural landscape," he said.

“Mr Beel’s artwork promises to be a significant addition to the Western Downs’ public art collection, encouraging community engagement and creating lasting memories for those who visit Lake Broadwater."

The installation of this piece will commence early May 2025.
