Arts & Culture Strategy

Council's Arts and Culture Strategy 2024-2029 is a strategic pathway for activating our places, spaces and heritage, and will guide the delivery of arts and cultural facilities, galleries, halls and museums, parks and outdoor spaces, and other natural landscapes over the next 5 years.

Our strategy is organised around four strategic pillars:

/1 GROW  Capacity building to grow our cultural ecology and economy.

/2 CONNECT  Connect and sustain community through arts and creativity.

/3 COMMUNICATE  Communicate and celebrate our diverse stories and identities.

/4 ACTIVATE  Activate and experience our places, spaces and heritage.

How we created this strategy?

In 2023 Council embarked on a journey to create an arts and cultural strategy to help guide our actions and investment over the next five years. We wanted to know what people find most rewarding about Arts and Cultural activities. According to people in the Western Downs, the thing that they love most about Arts and culture is its ability to provide social and community connection.

Why this strategy?

Creative experiences connect people and communities, enable learning and growth while building social resilience and a sense of belonging. In recent years, the value of arts and cultural participation for community recovery after natural disasters and significant social and economic hardship has become increasingly important.

Creating our own regional strategy means we take action to shape our own community identity and future through leveraging arts and cultural processes and engagement.

Next steps

The implementation of this strategy relies on partnerships within and beyond the region. While council plays a key role in investment and facilitation, we recognise the value of utilising the expertise and skills of practitioners, volunteers and community groups within the region.
